Brain Matter

My brain is an interesting organ. I mean everyone's brain is, but I think mine is particularly interesting and likely above average as brains go. The same brain that survived two surgeries and earned me three college degrees is the same one that can't seem to remember where I parked my car, or what day it is.  It's intriguing.

At home, my laundry has its own zipcode, while my dishes are multiplying exponentially.  Yet I just took 5 people all the way to Rhode Island on a budget airline to run an awesome race.  We all left our amazing airbnb on time with clean laundry to bring home and snacks for along the way and my brain just figured that all out naturally. Even the house.  It is intriguing. I think my husband would call it infuriating, but I find it intriguing.

The intriguing nature of my brain was on full display on our most recent sisterhood running adventure in Rhode Island.  We cooked up Rhode Island after my friend Becky and I compared notes in order to find a state that we both needed for our respective 50 states challenges. You see, while Mird and I are busy running a cool race together in all 50 states before we die, Becky's out there killing it running a  marathon in all 50 states to become a bonafide member of the official 50 States Marathon Club! She's pretty awesome!

We increased our degree of difficulty on this particular adventure by attending a highschool football game "on our way" out of town. I say on our way but it was actually like a 45 minute detour and involved an additional night sleeping away from home, but we did it in the name of family. So I could see my nephews once again. It was cold and rainy and we had an early morning flight to catch, but we did not let these facts deter us. I must say it was incredible and I am so glad we went because we got to witness an epic comeback victory that was absolutely spectacular.  Other than the race itself, that football game was the hightlight of the weekend!

The following morning after 3 hours of sleep thanks to the Tigers(sob sob) I woke up to my sister singing and dancing and proclaiming her personal hygiene superiority. I think she sang something along the lines of, "I showered and smell delicious for you guys so I am ready to go" to which I immediately responded, "I havent showered and I don't smell delicious, but I am going anyway".  We both laughed and then we were off to catch our ill advised 8 am Jet Blue flight. We got free snacks, coffee, and we arrived on time and alive for both of our direct flights to and from Boston!
We even fit in a quick airport workout!
Becky and Courtney were unimpressed, but we were pumped up so we really didn't care.

My brain typically avoids statistics, a habit that began back when I dropped out of a stats class in college because I couldn't understand the prof or the subject matter and that class made me feel inadequate and stupid.  Yet when it comes to running, I'm a statistical genius, crunching numbers to justify any crazy running adventure Mird or I can think up. And researching stats to support whatever crazy things I decide I'd like to do.  In Rhode Island, we beat the odds, cranked out some seriously impressive stats and crushed our goals.

The race itself was amazing, with breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline, charming neighborhoods and impressive crowds cheering us on.  We all finished just in time to avoid being soaked by the Nor'easter that had been threatening to break land all weekend.  Afterwards, we soaked in our hot tub and relaxed in our amazing Airbnb that my brain found which included everything we needed for a great weekend away. Not even a Nor'easter nor a nasty rental car experience could dampen our spirits.

The finish line pics that I have are not great, but they are all that I have so here you go...

Our house was a very very very fine house...

so relaxing after the run...

The following morning after some convincing and positive encouragement from me (okay I probably bullied her, but whatever) I just wanted to experience the Nor'easter. So after some convincing, Mird and I went out in search of coffee, and a good time. Luckily, we found both and got in a few miles along the way!  After a fun little wog along the cliff walk in the misty ocean air, we turned to head back and learned that we had been walking with the wind.  The wind caused me to nearly suffocate on the poncho I was wearing, but I survived thanks to Mird and we got coffee a little while later and took it home to enjoy with the rest of the crew. Then we headed back to the airports to fly out and the rest is as they say history.  What will my intriguing brain think up next?  Only time will tell.

so much fun experiencing the Nor'easter firsthand!

PS Thanks to Mird's my brain learned some new things on this trip like the largest insect statue in the world is in Providence Rhode Island; It's a huge termite names Nibbles. Rhode Island was the last of the 13 original colonies to become a state. Also, this region had significant importance during the Revolutionary War due to its strategic location. This post had many names none of which were Brain Matter so I feel a little credit to the runners up is due.  Here's to 1. You say you want a revolution 2. It's a Nor'easter and 3. North Dakota Prejudice the top three runner ups in the name game.
